Introduction to Hill Walking and Wildcamping

This 2 day course covers all the basics of walking and camping in the hills. Everything from route planning, kit selection and the legality and practicalities of wild camp locations to map and compass navigation, camp selection, pitching and emergency protocol.

We will meet at 11am on day one in the heart of the Dartmoor National Park. After introductions we will begin by discussing how to plan a wild camp including area selection, planning distance and route of the hike, map reading etc, then move on to what kit you need (and what kit you definitely don’t!) How to pack efficiently and make sure you are prepared for the coming adventure.

After lunch we will begin our walk which will lead us out into a remote and beautiful area of the park. We will be walking for approximately 6 hours at a fairly relaxed pace, taking breaks when needed. We will then find a suitable spot to camp and pitch our tents. Joe will cook a group meal and we will recap on what we have learned over the day. Then time for bed!

In the morning we will have porridge and coffee before packing up our camp and heading off. Another 5 or 6 hours of walking (including a generous lunch break) and we will find ourselves back at the starting point. We will then unpack and have a chance for more discussions or clarification before heading home at around 4pm
