Half day green woodworking
This half day workshop is great for anyone looking to try something new, get outdoors and enjoy creating something with beautiful natural materials. Its also a great place to start if you want to develop your green woodworking skills further but are relatively new to the craft.
Using a saw, axe, and carving knives we will be using green wood-working techniques to turn a freshly cut log into either a spatula or butterknife. (these are separate courses so please book on to the one you want to make, if you have a preference.)
The art of Green woodworking, in recent years, has seen a rise in popularity. There is something very satisfying about the simplicity and tactile nature of the craft. Using hand tools to shape a piece of wood, freshly cut so it is still soft enough to push a knife through. This skill can be used to create all sorts of wooden items. Butter knives and spatulas are a great place to start due to their size and somewhat two dimensional shape.

This half day is a great ‘give it a go’ or taster session and will leave you with a practical and beautiful creation to take home.
The course consists of:
- Instruction and demonstration of safe use of edged tools.
- Introduction to sawing, axing and the different knife techniques
- Discussion of wood types, how wood grows and how this helps us shape it
- Sawing and splitting wood down to size and creating a ‘blank’
- planning out a beautiful and functional design, informed and inspired by the piece of wood we are working with
- Using a small axe to further shape the wood
- Using a carving knife to refine the wood
- Making finishing touches and taking your new creation home!
- Snacks (fruit and biscuits) provided.
Group size is between 3 and 8 participants, and the course is run at either Bath City Farm or our woodland camp HQ near Bath.
